Hayes breaks 5K record at Oxy Spring Break Classic

LOS ANGELES — Junior Bryan Hayes of the University of La Verne men's track and field team broke his own school record in the 5,000 meters to highlight the Occidental Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic on Friday.

With most of the team traveling to Las Vegas for the UNLV Spring Invitational next week, La Verne only ran its distance runners.

Hayes finished 17th overall with a time of 14 minutes, 40.05 seconds, more than seven seconds faster than his previous best of 14:47.14 set at the 2014 SCIAC Track and Field Championships. He was the fourth NCAA Division III finisher behind John Fowler (Pomona-Pitzer), Joshua Sealand (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps) and Colin Smith (Occidental).

Seven other Leopards raced the 5K and Jayden Earlywine clocked La Verne's second fastest time at 16:01.38. David Sincock was next at 16:09.40 and Tanner Long finished with a time of 16:16.56.

Raymond Kwong was La Verne's lone competitor in the 1500m and finished with a time of 4:39.48.

On the women's side, Andrea Ramirez finished in 18:40.82 in the 5000m in the fast section. Kamalei Lee finished with a tie of 20:01.24 and Danica Langaynor came in at 20:58.96 in Section 3.

Sarah Chang ran the 800m in 2:25.79.

La Verne returns to action at the UNLV Spring Invitational on March 20-21.
