Men’s Track & Field splits at SCIAC Multi-Dual 2

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's track and field team won seven individual events at the second SCIAC Multi-Dual meet at Strehle Track on Saturday.

The Leopards beat Whittier 113-47 and lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 104-59.

Sprinters Nick Gonsalves and Josh Francis emerged double winners. Gonsalves came in first in the 100 meters at 10.95 seconds, Francis took the 400 at 49.90 seconds and both of them, along with Khayree Jones and Robert Oshodin, combined to win the 4x100 relay with a time of 41.69 seconds.

Francis came in a dead heat in the 200 meters (22.459), but was edged by seven-one thousandth of a second by Kofi Sekyi-Appiah (22.452) of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Gonsalves (22.58) and Oshodin (22.80) came in 3-4 in the event.

In another photo finish, the Leopards (Ben Bashor, Oshodin, Francis, Trevor Welch) finished one-one hundredth of a second behind the Stags in the 4x400 relay for second place with a time of 3:20.45.

Jones came in second behind Francis in the 400 at 49.97.

Bryan Hayes continued his hot streak in the 5000 meters and won the race in 15 minutes, 43.37 seconds.

Jason Nicholls claimed the pole vault with a clearance of 4.80 meters and added a pair of top five finishes in the discus (39.71 meters, fifth) and the javelin (44.65 meters, fourth).

Chris Gura won the discus with a toss of 43.44 meters and Andrew Carrasco dominated the hammer with a throw of 54.25 meters

La Verne returns to action next Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
