Track and Field kicks off season at Caltech All-Comers

PASADENA, Calif. — The University of La Verne track and field teams participated in the first competitive meet of the 2016 outdoor season at Caltech All-Comers Meet on Saturday.

The Leopards combined to win 23 of 38 events and a handful of athletes turned personal best times.

On the men's side, Andres Pulgarin cleared 3.95 meters in the pole vault, beating his previous record of 3.81 meters.

Carmen Sandoval and Kimmy Kabluyen set new personal records in the women's 400 meters and the 800 meters, respectively, at 1 minute, 3.32 seconds and 2:21.22. Catalina Lee Kim leapt 10.30 meters in the triple jump, surpassing her old mark of 10.12 meters set early last year.

Star sprinter Nick Gonsalves won the 60 meters with a time of 7.17 and the 100 meters at 11.20. Josh Francis handily won the 200 meters, crossing the line at 22.90.

Chris Gura was a double winner in the shot put (14.02m) and the discus (39.95m). Andrew Carrasco took the hammer throw with a toss of 50.34m and Michael Burciaga-Ellis claimed the javelin with a throw of 39.73m

Tiahna Gillon won the women's 100 meters by more than a second with a time of 12:86.

Mele Halalilo won both the shot put (11.36m) and the discus (36.84m). Gaby Moura-Hayes recorded a toss of 29.26m to win the hammer and Dreama Gonzales won the javelin with a throw of 25.88m.

A select group of Leopards will be in action next Monday for Run for the Dream Indoor Track and Field Invitational at Save Mart Center in Fresno.
