Men’s Track and Field splits SCIAC Multi-Dual

LOS ANGELES — The University of La Verne men's track and field team earned a handful of individual wins for a split result against Occidental and Caltech on Saturday at Bill Henry Track. The Leopards beat Caltech, 144-15, and lost to Occidental, 90.50-72.50.

Sprinters shined for the Leopards on the track. 

Nick Gonsalves, Josh Francis, Robert Oshodin and Austin Warrington combined to beat Oxy's All-American quartet of Jeh Johnson, Hugh Pegan, Gabriel Barrett-Jackson and Kyle Dalton with a time of 41.62 seconds. The Tigers crossed the line at 41.98

Warrington and Gonsalves went 2-3 in a photo finish in the 100m, with Warrington (11.024) just edging out Gonsalves (11.027). Pegan won the event at 10.87.

Francis came in second in the 200m with a time of 22.031 and finished fourth in the 400m at 48.828. Pegan won the 200m (21.78) and Johnson won the 400m (47.92).

The 4x400m team of Jeffrey Ouk, Oshodin, Jesus Payan and Francis are in second with a time of 3:20.24.

Buciaga-Elllis, a sophomore who hadn't thrown the hammer or the javelin as a freshman, beat his personal records in both events and added another personal best in the discus. He won the javelin throw with a toss of 50.64 meters (166 feet, 2 inches) and finished third in the discus with a throw of 38.12m (125-01).

Chris Gura won the shot put with a toss of 13.89m (45-07.00), was second in the discus (41.66m/136-08) and finished third in the hammer (48.90m/160-05).

Andrew Carrasco won the hammer with a throw of 50.22m (164-09) and added a fourth place finish in the shot put at 12.68m (41-07.25).

Jacob Lopez won the triple jump with a leap of 13.76m (45-01.75) and added a pair of top-three finishes in the hurdles. He was second in the 110m at 16.13 and came in third in the 400m with a time of 58.65.

Art Hinojosa notched a pair of third-place finishes in the long jump (6.40m/21-00) and the triple jump (13.33m/43-09.00).

The Leopards are back in action on Friday at the annual Occidental Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic.
