Carrasco breaks La Verne Hammer record at Pomona-Pitzer Invite

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Andrew Carrasco broke his own program record in the hammer throw at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday.

The senior, a 2016 All-American in the event, recorded a heave of 57.86 meters (189 feet, 10 inches) on his third attempt to easily win the event. He is undefeated in the event on the season. Carrasco recorded a toss of 57.43m (188-05) at last year's NCAA national championships.

Chris Gura and TJ Randall recorded personal records in the other throwing events. The duo went 3-4 in the shot put behind two throwers from Division II Azusa Pacific as both notched personal records in the event. Gura took third with a throw of 14.98m (49-01.75) and Randall was fourth at 14.63m (48-00).

Gura added an eighth place finish in the discus with a throw of 44.59m (146-03) and Randall added another personal record with a toss of 42.37m (139-00), which was good for 10th.

Joshua Francis posted good results in the sprint events. Francis went 11.08 in his first 100 meter race since the opening week of the season to finish 15th overall and finished 18th in the 200 meters with a time of 22.37.

Jeffrey Ouk recorded a personal best time of 22.84 in the 200 meters and tied is personal mark in the 400 meters at 50.56.

Distance specialist Samuel Johnny broke the 16-minute mark for the first time in the 5000 meters. The sophomore finished 18th overall in the event with a time of 15:49.85.

A select group of Leopards are back in action on Friday at Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State.
