La Verne trio punches tickets to NCAA National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS — Andrew Carrasco, Melissa Cerrillos and Catalina Lee Kim of the La Verne track and field teams were officially selected to participate in the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. The championships will be held May 25-27 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

For each men's individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each women's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition.  For each relay event contested, the top 16 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition.

Carrasco, a 2016 All-American in the hammer throw and three-time defending SCIAC champion, easily made the cut in the event. His season-best and school-record mark of 58.56 meters (192 feet, 1 inch) ranks fourth in the nation going into the championshp meet.

Cerrillos, who came out of nowhere to claim the SCIAC title in the 3,000-meter steeplchase in 2016, repeated as SCIAC champion and posted a school-record time of 10 minutes, 55.51 seconds at Redlands Final Qualifier meet to claim one of the last tickets in the event. She is seeded 21st in the race.

Lee Kim qualified in the 100-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 14.54. She goes into the championship ranked 19th in the event. Lee Kim was the breakout star of the season for the Leopards. She broke program records in the hurdles and the triple jump and won the SCIAC championship in the triple jump.
