Flagstaff, Ariz. — The University of La Verne track and field teams participated as a split squad this weekend turning in strong performances in Arizona at the Northern Arizona University Tune-Up and the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet.
"We had a solid weekend between the NAU Tune-Up and the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet," said Head Coach Kevin Reid. "Catalina Lee Kim's personal record in the 60 meter hurdles puts her inside the top 10 on the NCAA DIII qualifying list. The Saturday team meet was highlighted by several personal bests and seasonal bests."
La Verne 2018 Top Marks, Women
In Arizona, Catalina Lee Kim posted a personal best time of 8.97 in the 60 meter hurdle prelims and then bested that time in the finals with a time of 8.90. Adjusted for altitude, her time of 8.94 is the tenth in the nation.
Lee Kim had another big performance in the long jump, taking fifth with a leap of 5.47 meters (17-11.50).
In the men's triple jump, Kyle Ambat took third with a distance of 13.79 meters (45-03.00).
The La Verne men's 4x400 meter relay team turned in a third place performance with the combination of Patrick Cornwell, Terrence Robinson, Jeffrey Ouk, and Joshua Francis finishing with a time of 3:24.64.
Ebony Turner finished sixth in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters (5-01.00).
Francis took ninth overall in the 400 meter dash and was the top DIII performer with a time of 50.11.
Andrew Carrasco took ninth in the with a distance of 15.66 meters (51-04.50).
Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet
Freshman Karina Jimenez finished second among DIII competitors and third overall in the 400 meter dash, posting a time of 1:02.18.
Melissa Cerrillos finished third overall and first among DIII runners in the 800 meter run, crossing at 2:19.83.
Cambria Serrano took seventh in the discus with her best throw reaching a distance of 32.64 meters (107-01)
Jade Griffin took 10th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.59.
In the 800 meter run, freshman Matthew Salas finished in eighth, posting the second fastest time among DIII runners at 1:56.82.
Hunter Powers took 10th in the high jump reaching a height of 1.65 meters (5-05.00). He also took 10th in the pole vault at 2.90 meters (9-06.25). Quintus Alton took ninth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.05 meters (10-00.00).
In the men's shot put, Matthew Pedroza took sixth overall and was the second best DIII competitor with his best distance coming at 12.30 meters (40-04.25).
Michael Brown finished ninth in the discus with a distance of 38.82 meters (127-04).
Next Meet: Next week, a small group of Leopards will travel to the Principia College Invitational in Elsa, IL, to try to enhance their chances for NCAA DIII qualifying. The rest of the La Verne squad will compete down the street at the annual Rossi Relays at CMS.
