Men's Track and Field opens SCIAC competition

LOS ANGELES — The University of La Verne track and field teams opened SCIAC competition with a multi-dual at Bill Henry Track at Occidental College on Saturday. The Leopards scored as a team against Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and competed against Occidental and Chapman.

The La Verne women's squad went 1-1 with a win over Pomona-Pitzer and a loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The men's team fell to the Sagehens and Stags.

SCIAC Scoring: The competition counts in La Verne's dual meet record which makes up 25 percent of the overall SCIAC standings. The SCIAC Championship at the end of April determines the other 75 percent.

From the Coach: "We had a solid meet today with many fine performances. I was pleased with most of our performances and it was good to see us get a win in the men's 4x400m relay." said La Verne Head Coach Kevin Reid.

Top Performers: Catalina Lee Kim led the Leopards with a trio of wins in the 100m hurdles, the long jump, and the triple jump. She also anchored the women's 4x100 meter relay team and ran the first leg of the 4x400m relay.

Melissa Cerrillos earned a pair of top-three finishes taking second in the 800m and third in the 1500m. Cambria Serrano took second in the javelin and third in the shot put.

On the men's side, Joshua Francis scored wins in the 200m and 400m. He also anchored the 4x400m relay team that won the event with a time of 3:20.61.

Kyle Ambat scored second place finished in both the triple jump and the long jump.

Next Meet: The Leopards will be back in Eagle Rock next Saturday for the Oxy Sprint/Distance Classic. Some of La Vern's athletes will be in Orange County on March 10 competing at the Ben Brown Invitational.
