La Steps Down as La Verne's Water Polo Coach

LA VERNE — Alex La announced on Wednesday that he is resigning as the University of La Verne's men's and women's water polo coach after six seasons.

La, who played water polo at La Verne in 2001 and 2002, had coached the Leopards' water polo teams since 2008.

"I want to thank everyone at the University of La Verne for always supporting athletics and aquatics," La said. "My time at La Verne has been an amazing part of my life thanks to the faculty, coaches and especially the student-athletes. Although I will miss being the head coach at La Verne, I will always be a Leo."

During his tenure, La mentored four women's and four men's All-SCIAC athletes. In addition, a total of 11 men's and women's athletes were named to academic All-SCIAC teams since 2012.

"We thank Alex for his service to our young people, his alma mater and to our department," athletics director Julie Kline said. "Without question Alex has been a tremendous department team member, a loyal colleague, a positive role model for our young people, but more importantly, a friend to all of us. We wish Alex the best all his future endeavors."

A lifetime Leopard, La earned his both his bachelor's degree in business administration in 2003 and a master's degree in marketing in 2005 at La Verne.

A nationwide search is underway to find the next La Verne men's and women's water polo coach.
