Jimenez scores six, Men’s Water Polo rolls Caltech

PASADENA — Bryan Jimenez scored a game-high six goals, Daniel Newell made 13 saves and the University of La Verne men's water polo teams beat Caltech, 17-7, on Wednesday evening to earn its first SCIAC win of the season.

The Leopards used a big second half to pull away from the Beavers. After trading a goal apiece with Caltech coming out of the break, La Verne rattled off seven straight goals to create a 15-5 cushion, effectively putting the game away. Jonathon Jarvis had three goals during the run and Jimenez scored two.

Although Caltech kept it close for a half, La Verne never trailed at any point. Caltech tied it at 1-1 with a goal by Tim Blackwood but it lasted just 20 seconds as Jimenez put the Leopards back up in the next possession.

The Beavers cut the lead to one on a Chris Bradley power play goal with 41 seconds left in the first quarter but the Leopards went on a quick 3-0 run powered by goals from Josh Vega, Andrew Phillips and Jimenez to keep Caltech at bay.

Vega finished the game with four goals and Jarvis ended with three.

Blackwood led the Beavers with four scores and Bradley notched a hat trick as well.

La Verne returns to the pool on Saturday at 11 a.m. to face Cal Lutheran at La Verne Aquatics Center.
