Men’s Water Polo comes up short against Cal Lutheran

LA VERNE, Calif. — A big Cal Lutheran third quarter was the difference as the Kingsmen defeated the University of La Verne men's water polo team, 13-9, at La Verne Aquatics Center on Saturday.

The Kingsmen outscored the Leopards, 8-4, in the third quarter after the teams went into the break tied at 3-3. The teams initially traded goals to start the third quarter. The Leopards got within 6-5 on a Troy Williams goal but the Kingsmen used a 4-0 run to create a 10-5 cushion and never looked back.

The Leopards needed an early fourth quarter to stage a rally but allowed the first two goals of the frame to the Kingsmen to fall into a 13-7 hole.

After conceding an early goal to Cal Lutheran, Jonathon Jarvis and Josh Vega scored three straight goals to give the Leopards a 3-1 lead midway through the second quarter but the Kingsmen quickly erased the deficit with two straight goals.

Josh Vega tied for the game-high with three goals and seven different Leopards scored a goal each for La Verne.

Zach Graper and Mike Arteaga led the way for Cal Lutheran with three goals apiece.

La Verne returns to action on Nov. 1 when it travels to Orange to face Chapman. The first sprint is scheduled at 11 a.m.
