Men's Water Polo play four at Gary Troyer Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – La Verne Men's water polo team competed in its second four-game weekend tournament of the season at the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer on Oct. 2-3.

Viken Huening and Bryan Jimenez lead the Leopards offense with seven goals apiece during the weekend.

Goalkeeper Ian Hernandez recorded 39 saves on the weekend.

The Leopards matched the firepower of Division II Cal Baptist in the first quarter, but could not keep up the offensive intensity as it fell, 14-7.

The Leopards jumped out to a 5-2 lead at half aided by two goals apiece from Viken Huening and Joshua Vega in the second quarter against Division III No. 2 Johns Hopkins but could not sustain their defensive intensity in the second half. Johns Hopkins scored two goals in the game's final 40 seconds to steal the win.

The Leopards went into the interval tied at 4-4 but allowed five goals in the third quarter in a 10-8 loss to George Washington. Ryan Batchelor scored just 15 seconds into the fourth quarter to pull the Leopards within 9-7, but La Verne weren't able to equalize.

After trailing for most of the game, La Verne exploded for seven goals in the fourth quarter against SCIAC foe Cal Lutheran to force overtime. But the Leopards ran out of steam as they were shut out, 3-0, in extra time.

The Leopards fall to 4-8 on the season and will head to Cal Baptist University to compete at the Lancer Invitational next weekend.
