Castillo named ACWPC Honorable Mention All-America

LA VERNE, Calif. — Following an excellent debut season, Rey Julian Castillo of the La Verne water polo team was named a 2016 American College Water Polo Coaches Honorable Mention All-America.

The Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, native came to La Verne via West Valley College in northern California and made an immediate impact. Castillo led the Leopards with 80 goals on the season and 39 drawn ejections. The junior also tallied 44 steals and 17 assists. He scored 43 goals in SCIAC action.

Castillo led La Verne to its best season in recent memory as the Leopards notched five SCIAC wins for the first time in at least 10 years. He was also named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year and was tabbed Second Team All-SCIAC.

James Baker and Alex Rodriguez of Pomona-Pitzer were named the Division III Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively.
