Bennett, Castillo score twice against Stags

LA VERNE, Calif. — Rey Julian Castillo and Tyler Bennett both notched two goals and the University of La Verne men's water polo team led Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-3 at halftime.

But the Stags scored nine goals in the second half to jump in front of the Leopards and win 12-7.

Evan Monterroso, Jason Russum, and Joey Sabers each added a goal for the Leopards.

After Robert Driscol gave Claremont-Mudd-Scripps the opening 1-0 lead, Castillo scored back-to-back goals to give La Verne a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Stags and Leopards scored two goals apiece in the second quarter with Sabers and Bennett cashing in for La Verne.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored four goals in the third quarter to take the lead.

Ian Hernandez racked up 13 saves in the cage for La Verne.

Vega led the Leopards with two assists with Dario Mariani, Bennett, and Castillo each dishing out one assist.

Rex Sample recorded a team-high three steals.

Season Impact: La Verne now sits at 6-15 overall and 3-10 in the SCIAC. The Stags improve to 12-14 overall and 6-5 in conference play.

Next Game: La Verne closes out the season next Wednesday at home when they host the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 4 p.m. The Leopards will honor seniors Rey Julian Castillo, Jeremy Rocha, Joshua Vega, and Tyler Bennett in a brief pregame ceremony.
