Ortega scores eight, MWP rolls past Caltech

LA VERNE, CA — Charles Ortega scored a career-high eight goals and the University of La Verne men's water polo team rolled on their way to a 17-8 win over the Caltech Beavers Saturday afternoon at Las Flores Park.

Season Impact

The Leopards improve to 3-11 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC play. The Beavers fall to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

Stat Leaders

Ortega had an incredible game for the Leopards, scoring six of his eight goals in the second half alone to lead La Verne. The Covina native also added two steals.

Domenic D'Andrea netted a pair of goals to go with an assist and steal. Wesley Hovanesian, Myles Storms, Joey Sabers, and Michael Staine each scored once.

Hovanesian led the Leopards with two assists.

Mason Fox had a solid day in the cage. The junior grabbed nine saves in his start.

How It Happened

The Beavers played tough with La Verne through the opening 16 minutes, scoring three second quarter goals to send the game into the break tied 4-4.

But La Verne came out of the break firing, unleashing five goals to open the third quarter before the Beavers would score again.

The Leopards totaled 13 second half goals in the rout.

Next Game

La Verne continues SCIAC play on Wednesday, October 3 when they host the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags at 4 p.m.
