THOUSAND OAKS, CA — The University of La Verne men's water polo team rallied for six goals in the third period to erase a two-goal halftime deficit and the Leopards were primed to take a big road win at Cal Lutheran.
But the Kingsmen ended the game on a 3-1 run to take the 13-11 win.
Stat Leaders
Rex Sample led the Leopards with four goals, four steals, and two assists. Charles Ortega scored twice. Domenic D'Andrea finished with four steals and two assists.
Ian Hernandez finished the game with eight saves.
Ben Brown and George Lundgren each scored three times for Cal Lutheran.
How it Happened
After heading into the break down 6-4, the Leopards went on a surge late in the third quarter. Sample caught fire, scoring three goals in a minute and a half span to tie the score 10-10.
Dillon Goldsmith briefly but Cal Lutheran back on top when he converted a penalty shot. But Charles Lewandowski connected with Myles Storms with six seconds remaining in the quarter to tie the game back up.
Cal Lutheran's Matt Fong and the Leopards' Joey Sabers traded goals in the opening minutes of the final frame. But in the final four minutes, the Kingsmen capitalized on two power plays to take the lead for good.
Season Impact
The Leopards fall to 8-17 overall and 3-7 in SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran improves to 13-10 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
