MWP drops road game to Poets

WHITTIER, CA — Charles Ortega scored five goals, Ian Hernandez racked up nine saves, but it wasn't enough as the University of La Verne men's water polo team couldn't overcome a halftime deficit, falling to Whittier College 15-10.

The Leopards got off to a hot start, taking an early two-goal off of back-to-back goals from Michael Staine and Ortega.

Whittier stormed back, scoring the next three goals to take their first lead in the contest. Ortega was able to find the back of the next with 1:15 remaining in the opening quarter to even the score.

The second quarter was all Whitter. The Poets went on a 4-0 run to take the lead for good.

There was a flurry of goals in the third period with each squad scoring five times. Joey Sabers and Ortega got the momentum on La Verne's side scoring the first two goals after the break. But it wouldn't be enough.

Sabers finished with two goals. Evan Monterroso and Wesley Hovanesian each scored once.

Season Impact

The Leopards fall to 8-18 overall and 3-8 in SCIAC play. Whittier improves to 12-12 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
