Ortega Tabbed All-SCIAC, Barnuevo Named Newcomer of the Year

LA VERNE, CA — Alam Barnuevo was named SCIAC Newcomer of the Year and Charles Ortega was tabbed Second Team All-SCIAC the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced Friday.

Barnuevo had an outstanding start to his Leopard career. The freshman ranked third on the Leopards' squad with 47 goals and finished fourth with 66 points. The Whittier native also added 19 assists, drew 19 exclusions, and totaled 17 steals. Barnuevo scored at least three goals in nine games and had his best individual game in a 17-12 win over Austin College when he scored six goals, dished out one assist, added one steal, and drew one exclusion. 

Ortega capped off his Leopard career with his second All-SCIAC recognition. The senior earned second-team honors after leading the Leopards and finishing second in the SCIAC in both goals (72) and points (96). Ortega tied for first for La Verne with 52 drawn exclusions and also ranked second on the squad with 27 steals. The Covina native scored at least three goals in 15 games and netted at least five goals in six games. His best individual performance came against Occidental when he led the Leopards with five goals, two assists, four steals, and three drawn exclusion in an 18-10 win.
