LA VERNE, CA – The University of La Verne men's water polo team hosted the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen Saturday morning, but despite a strong performance by senior Guillermo Ocasio, the Leos fell 16-7.
Ocasio posted an impressive four steals on the defensive end. His stout defense continued on the other side of the pool. He scored two of the Leopards' seven goals and assisted one as well, accounting for three total points.
The rest of La Verne's offense, however, was held in check by an aggressive Kingsmen defensive attack. The normally imposing senior Michael Staine was held in check throughout the match, scoring only once on six shot attempts.
He and other Leos, like standout freshman Peter Trinh, didn't see the same level of production as they had against No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer earlier in the week.
After scoring an astounding five goals on ten shot attempts Wednesday, Trinh was held to only one score on seven attempts. The Cal Lutheran defense didn't allow La Verne to score on the interior, forcing multiple ceded possessions, especially at the beginning of the contest.
On the defensive side of the ball, despite allowing 16 goals, senior Ryan Lehotsky posted seven impressive saves and collected a steal on the day.
Next Game
The Leos will look to bounce back at Whittier on Wednesday, Sept. 29.
