Hayes leads Leopards at UC-Riverside Invitational

Sophomore Bryan Hayes paced the University of La Verne men's cross country squad again Saturday, placing 51st in a highly-competitive field at the UC-Riverside Invitational.

In addition to the host school, the Leopards competed against a bevy of Division I competition, finishing 13th in a 23-team field with 378 points in the men's invitational race.

League rivals Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scipps finished 10th (275 points) and 11th (288 points) respectively. Those squads also hold the top-two spots in the regional poll produced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. La Verne is currently ranked fifth.
 
Hayes completed the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 47.6 seconds. Seniors Cris Gutierrez and Alberto Acosta were the next La Verne runners across the line, finishing in 81st (26:13.9) and 89th (26:21.3) respectively. Freshman Tanner Long was next for the Leopards in 94th (26:26.2), with junior Jayden Earlywine taking 98th (26:27.5) and junior Ted Breslow rounding out the squad in 130th (26:53.8).
 
Sophomore Daniel Guasso led the Leopard men to a 15th-place finish (445 points) in the open race, crossing the line in 70th (27:49.3).
 
The Leopards will be off until the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational Oct. 5. The race will be contested on the Pomona-Pitzer campus, which is also the site of the NCAA Division III West Regional Championship meet Nov. 16.
