After a combined 19 innings, a SCIAC doubleheader between the University of La Verne and visiting Chapman University went the way of the Panthers as they topped the Leopards in a pair of extra-inning contests Friday at Wheeler Park.

In the opener, Chapman, ranked No. 22 in Division III, topped No. 25 La Verne 5-2 in eight innings before notching a 6-0, 11-inning triumph over the Leopards in the nightcap.  The Panther pitching duo of Cassie Oregel and Natalie Both each hurled complete game victories as La Verne's six-game winning streak came to an end.

GAME 1: Chapman 5, La Verne 2 - 8 inn.

La Verne held a 2-0 lead though three innings before the Panthers rallied with a run in fourth and sixth frames to knot the contest at 2.  In the bottom of the first, Jackie Duran hit a run scoring single to plate Danielle Vela with the first run followed by a sacrifice fly from Raven Freret to score Taylor Williams in the third.

Chapman's Stephanie Engel drove in a run in the fourth on an RBI double and would follow in the top of the sixth with a single to center which scored Amy Serven.

After both teams went scoreless in the seventh, the Panthers opened the eighth with a leadoff double from Brittany Furlong and a walk to Stephanie Engel.  With two outs, both runners advanced one base on a wild pitch.  Rhianna Stepler-Camp then drove in the go-ahead run with a single to left center to score Furlong.  After a walk to load the bases, pinch-hitter Jojo Wakabayashi stroked a two-run single to left center for a three-run advantage which provided the final margin of victory.

Engel finished 3-3 with 2 RBI while Furlong went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored.  Oregel held the Leopards scoreless over the final six innings, scattering 7 hits while striking out 7 for the win.

Vela led the Leopard offense with a 3-4 performance and a run scored.

GAME 2:  Chapman 6, La Verne 0 - 11 inn.

A pitcher's duel between freshmen Natalie Both and Lyndsay Godwin went seven innings with neither yielding a run to force a second extra-inning affair.

Godwin held the Panthers to three hits in her seven innings of work, allowing just one runner to reach second base.  The La Verne offense encountered a similar fate against Both as it reached second base on just two occasions through seven frames.

The two squads remained scoreless through the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings before the Panthers (21-7, 14-4 SCIAC) would break through in the top of the 11th.

With one out and runners on second and third, Engle singled in Larissa Rinauro for the game's first run and Kerry Peterson followed with an RBI single to score Jenny Richards for a 2-0 lead.  Kyla Javier then broke the game open with a three-run triple to clear the bases and score on a Leopard error to extend the Panther lead to 6-0 en route to the win.

Both pitched all 11 innings for the Panthers, holding the Leopards hitless over the final four innings as she finished with a five-hit shutout in striking out 10 batters.

La Verne (19-11, 11-9 SCIAC) will face yet another nationally-ranked squad Saturday when No. 19 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pays a visit to Wheeler Park for a conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
