Leos Fall To Bulldogs In SCIAC Tourney

The University of La Verne dropped its elimination game against top seed University of Redlands, falling to the Bulldogs 4-1 Saturday at the SCIAC Postseason Tournament in Redlands.

The contest marked the second meeting in two days between the schools, with La Verne posting a 5-2 win in the tournament opener on Friday.  This time, the Bulldogs got redemption, holding the Leos to a single run to advance in the tourney against CMS.

Redlands outfielder Sarah Beeman led off the second inning with a single up the middle, moved to second on an infield grounder, and scored on a Vicki King single for a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom of the third, with both Beeman and Vicki King registering one RBI each on a triple and single, respectively.

The Leopards got its lone run in the top of the fourth when Candice Nunez smacked a solo homer off of Kayla Uphold over the left-center field wall to get within two runs at 3-1.

In the top of the fifth, La Verne threatened when Mackenzie Dutton led off with a single and would eventually reached third base with two outs, but Bulldog starter Kayla Uphold induced a groundout to turn back the Leopard uprising.

Redlands added another score in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Dani Santos to score Beeman.

The Leopards got one more hit over the final two innings - a single up the middle from Nunez in the top of the sixth, and were retired in order in the seventh.

Uphold went the distance for the Bulldogs, scattering seven hits and giving up one run.

Both Nunez and Dutton finished 2-3 at the plate.

The Leos end the tournament with a 25-16 record, having beaten the No. 8 Bulldogs in four of the six meetings between the schools this season.
