Softball Falls to Denison

TUCSON, Ariz. – A couple of big Denison innings cost the University of La Verne softball team as the Leopards lost, 8-0, in the first game of the Tucson Invitational Games.

After two scoreless innings by either side, Denison broke the scoring seal with four consecutive singles to lead off the 3rd inning. Ellen McDevitt-Stredney reached on a bunt single, Julie Rooney singled to left center and Lindsey Kenyon legged out an infield single to second to score McDevitt-Stredney. Kenyon and Rooney then successfully executed a double steal to add a second run and Erin Laswell followed with an RBI single up the middle to put the Big Red up by 3-0.

Denison added five more runs in the bottom of the 5th to invoke the run rule. Gretchen Staubach and Abby Zofchak each had an RBI hit and Meghan Edwards drove in three with a homerun down the left field line.

Breeanna De La Rosa hit a double in the 1st, Katie Thompson singled in the 3rd and Danielle Vela hit a triple in the 5th for La Verne, but the Leopards could not follow those up with extra hits.

Rooney and Rachel Laughlin each had two hits for Denison and six other Big Red recorded a hit.

Rebecca Dyer pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.
