LA VERNE – Hayley Jaquess pitched a two-hit complete game to defeat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-1 in Game 1, but the University of La Verne team settled for a split as it lost Game 2, 11-4.

La Verne slips to 12-18 overall and 8-12 in SCIAC play. CMS improves to 20-11 and 15-7.

Game 1: La Verne 2, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1

Hayley Jaquess prevailed in a duel of aces against Hayley Schultz as La Verne won, 2-1, in Game 1.

Jaquess and Schultz came into the game with ERA in the low 1.00s and both lived up to their billing.

Jaquess went the distance, giving up just one run and two hits in a complete-game effort. Schultz also pitched all six innings for CMS, scattering six hits and not giving up a walk.

Jaquess gave up her lone run of the game in the first inning on an inside-the-park home run by Tara Robinson, but gave up just one hit and two walks the rest of the game. Robinson, a lefty hitter, sliced one down the left field line and the ball took a wicked bounce towards the far end of the third base dugout. Left fielder Katie Cunningham couldn't cleanly come up with the ball and speedy Robinson was able to round the bases.

The Leopards scored their two runs in the first inning as well. After two quick outs, Raven Freret doubled and Katherine Kibbe and Mackenzie Dutton each followed with an RBI single to give La Verne its first and final lead of the game.

The only other real threat from CMS came in the 3rd. Shannon O'Neill walked, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Tara Robinson also drew a walk and stole second to put runners on second and third with two outs, but Jaquess was able to get Brooklyn Robinson to pop up to short to get out of the inning.

Raven Freret went 2 for 3 in the game. BreeAnna De La Rosa, Amanda Chavez, Kibbe and Dutton each had one hit.

Game 2: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11, La Verne 4

CMS jumped out to a quick lead and La Verne never caught up as the Leopards lost, 11-4, in Game 2.

La Verne collected 12 hits and drew four walks, but just couldn't string together enough hits as it left 12 on base. In five of seven innings, the Leopards had two or more runners on, but could not cash in enough of them.

The Athenas scored four in the 1st inning and added six more runs in the next three innings to pull away.

Alexa Heydenberk led the CMS attack with a 4-for-5 performance. Tara Robinson was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Amanda Chavez was the leading hitter for the Leopards, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Danielle Vela and Raven Freret added two hits each.

The Leopards return to action on Monday when it hosts Arizona Christian for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
