Condon, Schiff hit grand slams in sweep of Dallas

LA VERNE, Calif. — It was a grand slam kind of night for the University of La Verne softball team.

The Leopards rode a pair of slams by Carly Condon and Alexis Schiff to sweep Dallas on Thursday at Campus West. The Leopards won the first game, 8-0, in five innings and took the nightcap, 10-6.

Condon lifted a fastball over the left field wall with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning to give La Verne a 6-0 lead and the Leopards cruised to an 8-0 run rule victory.

It was Condon's first home run of her collegiate career and her first-ever grand slam. She finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Condon sparked La Verne's first run of the game, leading off the bottom of the first with a line drive single to center and advancing all the way to third on an error by the center fielder. Mackenzie Dutton then brought her home with a perfect squeeze bunt.

Katherine Kibbe (5-3) fought with her control a little bit, giving up four walks, but gave up only three hits and racked up five strikeouts in a shutout

La Verne got off to another fast start in the nightcap to take a 6-1 lead after the fifth inning, but the Crusaders mounted a furious two-out seventh inning rally and strung together three hits and a couple of walks to tie the game at 6-6.

The Leopards didn't blink. Melissa Garcia led off with a walk, Condon and Victoria Baltazar scratched together a pair of singles and Schiff sent a moonshot over the left field fence to send everyone home.

Schiff finished 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Dutton created the early separtion for the Leopards as she accounted for the game's first four runs. After Condon led off the game with a single, Dutton singled to center to open the scoring and hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to give the Leopards a 4-0 lead.

Dutton was 2-for-5 with four RBI. Condon went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Angelica DeAngelo and Rachel Ogata recorded two hits each.

Hayley Jaquess (5-1), who was cruising until hitting the bump in the top of the seventh, got a complete game win.

The Leopards are back in action on Saturday at home against Occidental.
