REDLANDS, Calif. — Hayley Jaquess was solid in the circle, Shelby Tevis had a big game at the plate and the La Verne softball team beat Redlands 4-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday.
The Leopards lost the first game 6-4 in a nine inning game that took nearly three hours to complete and the second game was called in the top of the sixth inning due to darkness.
The Leopards got on the board first in Game 2 on a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the top of the first and Angelica DeAngelo singled in a run to take a 2-0 lead.
And that was all they needed as Jaquess (6-2) gave up just one run on three hits to pick up the win.
The Leopards tacked on a run in the top of the second as Rachel Ogata flied out and Tevis, who was on second, came around to score on an error by the left fielder.
The Bulldogs got one back in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Shannon Skrzynski but that was all they would get.
Tevis launched a solo shot in the fourth inning to seal the deal for La Verne.
Sienna Kendricks hit a homer and drove in three runs to put La Vern in position to win but the Leopards couldn't capitalize and fell in extra innings.
With a runner on and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Redlands's Summer Smith sent one over the left field fence to walk off.
The Leopards had a golden opportunity to put up some runs in the top of the ninth. With one out, Alexis Schiff singled, Katheryn Navarro drew a walk and Melissa Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases for La Verne. But the Bulldogs threw out Schiff at home on a fielder's choice and escaped the jam as Shelby Tevis flied out to center to end the inning.
Kendricks hit a solo home run in the top of the second to open La Verne's scoring and drove in two more runs with a single in the third to give the Leopards a 4-2 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by Amanda Ang and neither team scored until Smith's homer.
Kendricks, Schiff and Angelica DeAngelo all had two hits apiece.
Ursyla Baumgarten had two hits for Redlands and eight other Bulldogs recorded one hit each.
The Leopards are back in action next Saturday at Occidental.
