LA VERNE, Calif. — La Verne's Alexis Schiff was named SCIAC Athlete of the Year for softball and five other Leopards garnered All-SCIAC honors after back-to-back conference championships.
Hayley Jaquess, Elisa Ponce and Carly Condon were named to First Team along with Schiff. Angelica DeAngelo and Sienna Kendricks earned Second Team Honors.
Schiff, a senior from Long Beach, led the league in virtually every offensive cateogry. She topped the SCIAC in batting average (.393), on-base percentage (.507), slugging percentage (.879), home runs (14), RBI (35) and runs (40).
It is the second year in a row that a La Verne softball player has received the Athlete of the Year award. Katherine Kibbe won it last year.
Jaquess, a senior from Highland, turned in her best season since her freshman year when she was named Second Team All-SCIAC and bookends her career with her second all-conference honor. She posted a record of 10-5 with nine complete games and recorded a 2.16 ERA.
Ponce, a junior transfer from Iowa Western Community College, claimed the role of team ace almost immediately upon her arrival and had a stellar debut season. She went 11-4 with eight complete games and 78 strikeouts while posting a 2.37 ERA.
Condon put up better numbers across the board from what was an outstanding freshman season to pick up her first all-conference award. The sophomore from Santa Monica hit .368/.460/.667 with five home runs, 25 RBI and 38 runs scored. She also smacked 12 doubles and four triples while swiping 14 bases.
DeAngelo was slotted into full-time catching duties before the season and responded with the best season of her career. She hit .337/.374/.475 with two home runs and 19 RBI. She also recorded a .982 fielding percentage and threw out 10 base stealers, which was the second most in the SCIAC.
Kendricks, who was named to First Team All-SCIAC as a freshman last year, turned in another impressive season. She hit .327/.333/.529 and boosted her power numbers, hitting five home runs with 29 RBI.
The Leopards, who came up just short in last year's SCIAC Postseason Tournament, will try to finish the business this year and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championship.
