Softball drops to CMS, 10-1, in SCIAC Postseason Tournament

LA VERNE, Calif. — The La Verne softball team went down early and never recovered in a 10-1 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the winners' semifinal game of the 2017 SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Campus West.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored four runs in the first inning and added at least a run in each of the subsesequent three innings to pull away early. The Athenas chased La Verne starter Elisa Ponce after just a third of an inning as they got to her for three hits and two walks.

La Verne got one back in the bottom of the first. Carly Condon led off with a single and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt and a single by Alexis Schiff. Sienna Kendricks followed with a groundout to the shortstop to plate Condon to cut the deficit to 4-1 but that was all La Verne would muster for the game.

The Athenas added two in the second inning off a fielding error, scored on a fielder's choice in the third and took advantage of another error in the fourth to take a 8-1 lead. They capped off their scoring with a 2-run home run by Carly Roleder in the seventh inning.

Schiff was 2-for-3 to lead the Leopards.

Roleder finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

Anna Gurr (16-6) picked up the win for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps after going all seven innings while striking out four.
