Leopards pick up win in Texas

SEGUIN, Texas — Angelica DeAngelo totaled three RBI, Elisa Ponce picked up the win in the circle, and the University of La Verne softball team scored twice in the fourth inning to beat the UT Dallas Comets 6-5 Friday afternoon.

DeAngelo went 2-3 at the plate and brought in what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning when she hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Katheryn Navarro to put her squad up by one.

Navarro, Rachel Ogata, and Melissa Garcia each added a pair of hits.

The Leopards got off to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning off an RBI by Borden.  A single by DeAngelo sent Borden and Navarro across the plate to put La Verne up 3-0.

But the early lead didn't last long. The Comets responded with four runs their next time up to take the 4-3 advantage and added another run in the third to go up by two.

La Verne got its bats going in the bottom half of the third inning. DeAngelo got on base with a single to left and Shelby Tevis followed with a walk, and an infield single by Garcia loaded the bases. Sienna Kendricks stepped up to the plate next and singled to right bringing in pinch runner Toni Lozano to get within a run of the Comets.

The Leopards evened the game in the fourth when Borden reached on an error, sending Carly Condon home from third, setting up DeAngelo's sacrifice fly.

Ponce earned her fourth win, going five innings in her start, striking out three and walking just one. Ashley Caro picked up the save.

Borden finished with two stolen bases and an RBI.

La Verne dropped its second game against the Comets 8-3. Ogata and Garcia each finished with a pair of hits. Garcia, Condon, and Mikayla Mendoza each notched an RBI.

Season Impact: The Leopards, who are picking up votes in the NFCA national rankings, move to 12-6 overall.
