DeAngelo hits three-run bomb in win over Poets

WHITTIER, Calif. — Angelica DeAngelo hit a three-run bomb to spark a five-run seventh inning and the Leopards scored a comeback win, beating the Whittier College Poets 9-6

Season Impact: The Leopards hold on to first place in the SCIAC improving to 8-2 in SCIAC play and 13-9 overall. Whittier moves to 5-5 in the SCIAC and 12-9-1 overall.

DeAngelo finished with a pair of hits and four RBI.

Trailing 6-4 heading into the final inning, Katheryn Navarro got the Leopards' bats going with a single to center. Freshman Tauney Mack stepped up next, doubling to right center, to bring the tying run to the plate.

DeAngelo capitalized with her fourth home run of the year to put La Verne ahead by one. Whittier pitcher Sam Casanas walked in two more runs to put La Verne up 9-6.

Michelle Deguzman put La Verne up 3-1 early in the game when she hit a solo shot to left field. The Leopards are currently tied for first in the SCIAC with 17 home runs.

Jiana Rojo picked up the win, pitching three and two-thirds innings allowing just one run and striking out one. Elisa Ponce went three and a third innings in her start finishing with four strikeouts.

Navarro, DeAngelo, and Garcia each finished with a pair of hits. Carly Condon and Michelle Deguzman both added an RBI.

Game Two: Whittier 9, La Verne 4

Navarro added her team-leading six home run of the season in the third inning, hitting a two-run shot that brought in Rachel Ogata, but the Leopards fell in game two to the Poets.

Justice Borden added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Navarro took the loss in the circle. 

Next Game: The Leopards play at Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
