Rojo throws no-hitter, Leopards sweep Chapman

LA VERNE, Calif. — Jiana Rojo threw a no-hitter in game one, Elisa Ponce earned a complete game win game two, and the University of La Verne softball team swept the Chapman Panthers Saturday afternoon at Campus West.

Season Impact: With the wins, the Leopards improve to 17-11 overall and 12-4 in conference play. La Verne currently sits in second place in the SCIAC. Chapman drops to 13-13 overall and 6-8 in the SCIAC.

Game One: La Verne 7, Chapman 2

Rojo was solid on the mound earning the complete game win in her first career no-hitter. The freshman did not allow a walk through the first six innings and finished with six strikeouts on the way to her fifth win of the year.

The Leopards got the job done offensively finishing with 10 hits.

Carly Condon got the Leopards on the board in the bottom of the second inning. The junior stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a shot down the right field line, bringing in Rachel Ogata, Sienna Kendricks, and Angelica DeAngelo. Condon finished the game 2-3 with a walk and run scored.

Katheryn Navarro also had a big day at the plate finishing with three hits. The first baseman knocked in a pair of runs with a single in the sixth to put the Leopards up 7-0.

DeAngelo and Justice Borden each added an RBI in the win. Ogata crossed the plate twice.

Chapman got some breaks in the final inning scoring two runs off three La Verne errors. But Rojo forced Kyra Gallego into a fly out to end the game. 

Sarah Taketa took the loos for Chapman.

Game Two: La Verne 4, Chapman 3

Ponce struck out six to pick up her seventh win of the season and the Leopards held off Chapman in the top of the seventh to finish the sweep.

La Verne again totaled double-digit hits, finishing with 11 in game two.

Katheryn Navarro was stellar at the plate. The sophomore finished a perfect 3-3 and added two RBI, including one in the third to extend La Verne's lead to 3-1.

Sienna Kendricks gave the Leopards the lead in the second with a single through the left side to put La Verne ahead 2-1.

Sarah Hartmann took the loss for the Panthers.

Next Series: The Leopards travel to Cal Lutheran next Friday to face the Regals in a doubleheader beginning at 2 pm.
