Softball drops two at CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Sienna Kendricks and Justice Borden each finished with three hits but the Leopards dropped both road games to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.

Season Impact: Despite the losses, the Leopards maintain hold of first place in the SCIAC with a 17-7 conference record. Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier are currently in a tie for second place with a 16-8 record in SCIAC play.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improves to 15-9 in the SCIAC.

Game One: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4, La Verne 0

They game stayed even through four and a half innings, but the Athenas exploded with six hits and four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take game one.

Kendricks was solid at the plate, going 3-3 in the game. Borden added a double in the fourth.

Jiana Rojo went six innings in her start, striking out seven but taking the loss.

Anna Gurr picked up the win for the Athenas.

Game Two: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 8, La Verne 6

The Leopards rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the Athenas' lead to two runs, but that was as close as they would get, falling in game two.

Katheryn Navarro and Borden each finished with an RBI. Carly Condon and Borden each totaled two hits.

La Verne got off to a hot start scoring three runs in the opening inning off a double but Navarro and a triple by Borden. The Leopards added another one when Borden reached home on a passed ball.

The Athenas responded in their first time up, evening the game with three runs of their own.

CMS rallied in the fourth, scoring five runs to take an 8-3 lead.

La Verne benefitted off a pair of CMS errors in the final inning to make the game close. Navarro reached on an error with the bases loaded that sent Condon and Tevis across the plate. 

Borden came up to the plate next and reached on another error that scored catcher Angelica DeAngelo, but then the Leopards grounded out to end the game.

Elisa Ponce struck out six batters in her start. Navarro and Ashley Caro each stepped in for relief.

Next Series: La Verne returns home next Friday in an important doubleheader against Whittier College. Game one starts at 2 p.m.
