Softball falls in Championship game

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne softball team's great 2018 campaign came to an end Sunday afternoon as the Leopards dropped the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship game to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-0.

La Verne ends the season 28-16 overall and won their third straight regular-season SCIAC Championship.

The Athenas, who played as the home team, got on the board early, scoring two runs off back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first inning.

Neither team could get on the board after that.

The Leopards struggled at the plate, managing just three hits in the contest with two coming from junior centerfielder Carly Condon and another from senior catcher Angelica DeAngelo.

La Verne had a chance in the final inning with Katheryn Navarro reaching third after a groundout by Sienna Kendricks. But another groundout ended the game at 2-0.

Elisa Ponce was solid in the circle for La Verne, striking out nine in her start.

The Leopards lose DeAngelo, Ponce, and Ashley Caro but will bring back All-SCIAC players Condon, Navarro, and Newcomer of the Year Jiana Rojo
