Softball splits with No. 7 Berry

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne softball team went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the nations and split with No. 7 Berry Sunday afternoon.

Season Impact

After Sunday's results, La Verne moves to 7-5 overall. The Vikings now stand at 8-2.

Game One: La Verne 3, No. 7 Berry 2

In just her third trip to the plate this season, freshman catcher Bailey Grani came through huge for the Leopards, hitting an RBI double to center to score Rachel Ogata from first and put La Verne up for good.

Ogata finished off the game with stellar defense. With the tying run at second, the senior made a spectacular diving catch to end the game.

Senior Carly Condon got the Leopards on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to right that brought in Justice Borden.

Gabriella Underwood gave La Verne its first lead of the game in the third when singled in Shelby Tevis.

Jiana Rojo picked up her third win of the season, pitching a complete game with three strikeouts. Katheryn Navarro and Ogata each hit a double.

Katlin Seger led the Vikings with two hits and an RBI. Meredith Holland took the loss for Berry.

Game Two: No. 7 Berry 9, La Verne 5

La Verne scored four runs in the fifth but it wasn't enough to erase a 7-0 deficit in game two.

Underwood led the Leopards with an RBI, two hits, a run, and two walks. Francheska Juarez scored twice of La Verne.

Ogata finished with two hits and an RBI. Borden added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Berry was led by Kayla Sangrey's two home runs.
