Softball drops pair to No. 3 Ithaca

LA VERNE, CA — The Leopards led for five innings and looked poised to upset the No. 3 Ithaca Bombers Wednesday afternoon at Campus West.

But a seventh inning grand slam put Ithaca up 6-4 and the University of La Verne softball team couldn't muster enough offense in the bottom half of the inning, falling to the Bombers 6-5.

How It Happened

Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, catcher Katheryn Navarro got to work with a leadoff single up the middle and moved to second off a Justice Borden sacrifice bunt.

Gabriella Underwood stepped up next and hit a shot to right to send Navarro barreling around third and home for the 5-4 advantage.

Mikayla Mendoza added to the lead two batters later when she brought in Underwood with a triple to right field that gave La Verne a two-run cushion.

In the seventh, the Leopards were one out away from their second win against a top-ten opponent this week after defeating then No. 7 Berry on Sunday. But Daniella Mulvey had other plans, hitting a two-out grand slam to put the Bombers up two.

Toni Lozano reached on an error that brought in Shelby Tevis in the bottom of the inning but the Leopards couldn't score the tying run.

Navarro and Mendoza both posted three hits and an RBI. Jiana Rojo struck out six in a complete game. Emily Holden picked up the win for Ithaca.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bombers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first and beat the Leopards 8-0.

Season Impact

After Wednesday's results, the Leopards drop to 7-7 overall with the Bombers improve to 4-1.

Next Game

The Leopards return to SCIAC action on Saturday when they host the Whittier Poets in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
