La Verne, CA: The University of La Verne Leopards split a double header against the Brandeis Judges on Wednesday night, shutting them out 3-0 and dropping the second game 5-3.
Game One
The Leopards offense scored twice in the 3rd inning with a run scoring triple by Haylee Hsieh and capped off with an RBI single by Marissa Acosta. Ashley Rodriguez doubled in Taylor Gray in the 4th inning to give La Verne a comfortable 3-0 lead. Three runs would be plenty for Rachel Rubio as she cruised to her third complete game of the season (career high) and first shutout. Rubio allowed only 5 hits while striking out 6 batters, improving to 3-0 on the season.
Game Two
La Verne was trailing 1-0 in the 4th inning, when Ashley Campbell hit her first collegiate home run to give the Leopards a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately for the Leo's that lead would not hold up and they would trail 5-2 going into the 6th inning. The Leopards cashed in a run in the 6th with a Janissa Rojo base hit scoring Cailin Bliss but would still trail 5-3 heading into the last inning. La Verne loaded the bases in the 7th inning but their rally would fall short when Brandeis induced a game-ending double play.
Standouts
Rachel Rubio gained her third win of the season, tying her career high. Haylee Hsieh collected 3 hits, drove in a run, and scored twice over the double header. Ashley Rodriguez and Janissa Rojo each collected two hits and an RBI over the two games.
Season Impact
The Leopards moved to 4-1 on the young season after splitting the double header with the Judges.
