La Verne Cruises Past Caltech
The University of La Verne women’s water polo squad gained a 16-5 victory over the visiting Caltech Beavers Saturday afternoon at La Verne Aquatic Center.
La Verne, which improves to 6-7 on the season, got off to a fast start as they took a two-goal lead by the 5:17 mark in the first quarter after sophomore Mahina Reyes and senior Mary Cotner scored back-to-back goals.
After grabbing a 5-2 edge in the first period, the Leopards scored three times to take a commanding 8-2 advantage by halftime. The Beavers managed to collect three additional goals in the second half, but the Leopards equaled their goal totaled from the first half en route to earning their second consecutive win.
For the match, senior Laura Larsen led the Leopards in scoring with four total goals, two each in the first and second quarter. Reyes also tallied four scores, including the last one the hosts netted in the game with 46 seconds remaining. In addition, junior Jen Aguilar, sophomore Catherine Campos and Cotner registered two goals each, while seniors Katie Watkins and Kari Erikson had one apiece.
The Leopards hit the road next as they face California Lutheran on Tuesday, April 2, in Thousand Oaks at 5 p.m.
