Whittier Topples ULV In League Action
The University of La Verne dropped a 14-4 SCIAC decision to ninth-ranked Whittier College Wednesday evening at La Verne Aquatic Center.
With the loss, La Verne fell to 6-10 overall and 0-3 in conference competition. Whittier moved to 4-11 and 1-3, respectively.
The Poets got off to a fast start, scoring the first two goals by the 5:04 mark. ULV would respond at 3:28 when senior Mary Cotner netted a score to cut the deficit to one. It marked the closest ULV would get of the visitors, who collected two more goals in the first quarter.
Senior Laura Larsen hammered the next score for the Leopards with 4:30 in the second to cut the Poet edge to 4-2, but Whittier would score four more times to possess an 8-3 advantage at the break.
For Whittier, senior Caroline Galvin led the way with four goals while freshman Veronica Becerra earned a hat trick.
The Leopards host a doubleheader Saturday, starting with a match against fifth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 10 a.m. before playing fourth-ranked Cal State East Bay at 4 p.m.
