PASADENA – Every senior won an event in his or her last SCIAC dual meet and the University of La Verne swimming and diving teams beat Caltech on Saturday at the Braun Pool.
Seniors Samary Morales (200-yard medley relay and 800 freestyle relay); Sammi Shiomoto (100 free); Brandelyn Storms (100 backstroke); Jacob Tittl (3-meter diving); Coleman Goode (100 free); and Marc Okimua (200 medley relay) all emerged victorious in the final dual meet of their collegiate careers.
The medley relay teams got the Leopards to a good start.
Women's 200-yard medley relay team of Krislyn Cha, Mariela Martinez, Morales and Melanie Consiglio kicked off the meet by winning the event at 2:10.80.
The men then went 1-2-3 in their medley relay and the B-team of Mike Sanchez, Marc Okimua, Devon Photias and D.J. Atherton claimed first with a mark of 1:41.19.
"Today, we committed ourselves to racing for relays, looking to see who might fill the many relay spots at the SCIAC Championships," La Verne head coach Pat Skehan said. "This allowed us to swim a lot of different events and put all the emphasis on the actual racing and not the final time."
Cha, Consiglio and Morales also swam on the winning 800 freestyle relay team and the women went 1-2-3. The Leopards swept the men's 800 relay as Caltech did not race the event.
In addition to the 200 medley relay win, Photias also took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.92. Sanchez was another double-winner, touching the wall first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:01.21.
Mike Rashed was victorious in the 500 free with a time of 5:13.84.
Elsewhere for the women, Melissa Pryor won the 1000 free (11:37.03), Maddie Lovrensky claimed the 200 individual medley (2:26.51). Jessie Watkins and Jackie Rojas added wins in the 500 free (5:41.97) and the 100 breast (1:10.02), respectively.
The La Verne men won the both diving events. Tittl scored a 261.50 on the 3-meter and Scott McKay posted a 246.40 on the 1-meter.
"We really stepped up our game today and swam very well with lots of season bests," Skehan added. "This will really help us in two weeks at the SCIAC Championships. It was an awesome way to finish the season."
With the final regular season meet in the books, the teams will travel to the City of Commerce Aquatorium on Feb. 21-23 for the SCIAC Championship Meet.
