Swimming Gets Off to Fast Start at SCIACs

COMMERCE – The University of La Verne swimming teams set school records in four events and were just shy in two others on Day One of the SCIAC Swimming Championships.

In the 200 individual medley, Sammy Shiomoto bettered the old record by nearly three seconds as she posted a 2:12.87 in the consolation finals.

Both 400 medley relay teams set records. Men's "A" team of Coleman Goode, Marc Okimura, Photias and Carpenter combined to touch the wall in 3:28.86, almost three seconds faster than the previous record of 3:31.00. The women made the podium in their relay as Maddie Lovrensky, Jackie Rojas, Shiomoto and Consiglio came in second at 3:53.89. The previous record in the women's 400 medley relay was 4:00.98.

Lovrensky was one-one hundredth of a second off the record in the 50 free when she touched the wall at 23.97 in the prelims. She placed 4th in the finals with a time of 24.15.

Women's 200 free relay came in 4th at 1:38.68 and missed the record (1:38.40) by two-tenth of a second.

Out of 46 Day One swims, 40 were season bests for the Leopards.

"We got off to a really good start," La Verne head coach Pat Skehan said. "This year's meet is a lot faster than last year's but we were right there."

After the first day of competition, the men sit in 4th place with 167 points and the women are 6th with 119 points with good chances of moving up.

Day Two of the SCIAC Championships begins tomorrow at 9 a.m.
