INDIANAPOLIS – The University of La Verne swimmer Madeline Lovrensky didn't quite perform the way she would have liked to in her signature 100-yard backstroke at the NCAA Division III National Championships on Friday.

But she did break her own school record and the SCIAC record, touching the wall at 55.58 to place second in the consolation final. Her previous mark was 55.82, which was set in last year's national championships.

"Today really demonstrated what a champion Maddie is," La Verne head coach Pat Skehan said. "A champion is not the person that always wins but the person who falters and gets back up. We were a little off this morning but we absolutely turned it around.

"I am really proud of this performance."

Lovrensky, who earned All-America honors after placing 6th in the event last year, just missed the championship final cut after posting a time of 56.33 seconds in the fastest heat of the morning prelims.

Two swimmers finished faster than 55 seconds in Lovrensky's heat and a total of three backstrokers finished in the 54s.

On Saturday, Lovrensky, La Verne's lone representative at the national championships this year, raced in the 200 back. Unfortunately, the junior went over 15 meters on the start and was disqualified in the morning prelims.

"She was in lane one, saw the official's hand go up and still went in the 2:01s," Skehan said.

On Wednesday, Lovrensky broke her own school record in the optional 50 freestyle. She bettered her previous mark of 23.96 by nine-one hundredth of a second to finish 23.87 in the prelims.
