Swimming & Diving dives into season at Pomona-Pitzer Relays

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams officially kicked off their 2014-15 seasons against top competition at the annual Pomona-Pitzer Relays.

The Leopards posted nine top-five finishes against a field that included the SCIAC's top-two finishing teams from last season (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer), NCAA Division II Cal Baptist and NAIA Concordia Irvine.

The women's 200-yard medley relay team of Maddie Lovrensky, Jackie Rojas, Krislyn Cha and Melanie Consiglio kicked off the meet with a fourth-place finish with a time of 1 minute, 52.89 seconds.

Lovrensky was involved in all four of the women's top-five finishes. The All-American swam the first leg of the 3 x 100 backstroke before Mary Hanna and Krislyn Cha finished it off (3:07.83, 4th); swam the anchor leg of the 4 x 100 individual medley with Cha, Hanna and Rachel Miyoga (4:24.92, fourth); and combined with Consiglio, Hanna and Cha in the 200 freestyle to take fourth at 1:43.72.

The men notched three top-five finishes.

Jarrett Peterson, Mike Sanchez, Viken Huening and Daniel Carpenter had two fourth-place finishes. In the 400 free, the quartet touched the wall at 3:19.54 and came in at 1:29.94 in the 200 free.

La Verne also had good showings in the two co-ed events. Consiglio, Peterson, Hanna and Sanchez teamed up to take third in the mixed 8 x 25 free at 1:28.52 and Sanchez, Lovrensky, Harry Bennett and Rojas combined for a fifth-place finish in the 8 x 25 medley with a time of 1:39.90.

La Verne swimmers will be back in action next Saturday at the Bulldog Pentathlon. Divers will start their seasons on Nov. 15 at the Bulldog Diving Invitational.
