Swim & Dive turns in 20 season-bests at Oxy

LOS ANGELES — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams registered 20 season-best times in a dual meet against Occidental at Taylor Pool on Saturday.

Maddie Lovrensky and Melanie Consiglio highlighted the women's competition with four wins apiece.

Jarrett Peterson and Daniel Carpenter claimed three events each to lead the men's team.

Lovrensky and Consiglio teamed up to win the women's 200 yard medley relay in 1 minute, 52.24 seconds swimming the backstroke and the freestyle legs, respectively. Jacqueline Rojas swam the breaststroke and Krislyn Cha swam the butterfly.

Lovrensky added individual wins in the 200 freestyle (2:01.06), the 100 backstroke (1:00.54) and the 200 backstroke (2:11.15).

Consiglio won the 50 freestyle (25.53) and the 100 freestyle (55.91). The senior wrapped up the meet by swimming the first leg of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay (1:44.70) with Rojas, Mary Hanna and Karla Fuertez.

Fuertez had perhaps the most impressive meet for the Leopards given the events she swam. Fuertez swam an incredible 1,750 yards in the meet, including the 1000 freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle, which were back-to-back. The junior finished second in the 1000 at 11:19.71 and raced back in the 200 to finish second behind Lovrensky at 2:02.75. She then came back to score in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall at 5:27.95.

Hanna finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.54 and turned in a lifetime best performance in the 50 freestyle at 26.72. The freshman notched another third place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:21.17.

Cha was just out-touched in the 100 butterfly (1:02.53, third) and the 200 butterfly (2:17.23, second), but came back to take the 200 individual medley with a season-best time of 2:17.09.

Peterson turned in season-best times in the 100 backstroke (56.17), the 200 backstroke (2:00.75) and 200 IM (2:03.36), winning all three.

Carpenter was also a triple individual winner, touching first in the 200 freestyle (1:47.91), the 50 freestyle (21.76, season best) and the 100 freestyle (48.06).

La Verne returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Whittier for the final home meet of the season. Before the meet, the team will hold a brief ceremony honoring the careers of its eight seniors.
