Seniors lead Swim & Dive against Whittier in last home meet

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams registered 17 more season-best times in the final home meet of the season against Whittier on Saturday.

The men claimed eight of 15 events to win the meet, 130-116, while the women were edged, 138-134, despite taking nine of 15 events.

On a day when the team honored its nine seniors before the meet, it was fitting that the veterans led the way.

Jarrett Peterson highlighted the men's competition by winning all four events in which he swam. The senior captain started the winning men's 400 yard medley relay (3 minutes, 39.42 seconds) by swimming the backstroke leg and won three individual events. He took the 100 backstroke at 57.56, won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.42 and capped off his day with a win in the 200 individual medley at 2:04.39.

Mike Sanchez comfortably won the two breaststroke events in addition to the 400 medley relay. He won the 100 breaststroke by nearly seven seconds, coming in at 58.58, and took the 200 with a time of 2:09.36.

Maddie Lovrensky was a quadruple winner on the women's side. The senior All-American kept her career-long undefeated streak in the backstroke events in SCIAC meets by taking both the 100 (58.70) and the 200 (2:10.97) while adding a big win the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.22. She also combined with fellow seniors Jacqueline Rojas and Melanie Consiglio to win the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:10.94.

Rojas swept the women's breaststroke events. She touched first at 1:10.36 and 2:36.20 in the 100 and the 200, respectively. She won both by more than five seconds.

Consiglio emerged victorious in her signature event, 100 freestyle, beating out Kayla Heiss of Whittier by nine one-hundredth of a second.

In all, La Verne's seniors accounted for 13 of the 17 wins.

Underclassmen did their part, too. Krislyn Cha won two of the most grueling events, taking the 200 butterfly (2:16.13) and 200 IM (2:17.62) on the women's side. Daniel Carpenter was the only swimmer to come in under 50 seconds in the men's 100 freestyle at 48.68.

Scott MacKay kicked off the meet by winning both diving events. He scored a six-dive total of 301.10 points on the 3-meter board and scored 247.85 on the 1-meter.

The Leopards will wrap up its dual meet portion of the schedule next Saturday when they travel to Chapman to face the Panthers and the Bulldogs of Redlands.
