Lovrensky claims 50 free on Day 2 of SCIAC Championships

WHITTIER, Calif. — Maddie Lovrensky of the University of La Verne women's swimming and diving team out-touched defending champion Kelly Ngo of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the women's 50 yard freestyle to claim the first individual championship for the Leopards at the 2015 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Cal Lutheran at Lillian Slade Aquatics Center.

Lovrensky won the race in a school record time of 23.62 seconds, five one-hundredth of second ahead of Ngo.

Melanie Consiglio finished fourth in the same event with a personal best time of 24.22 seconds.

Karla Fuertez also recorded a personal best and scored points in the women's 500 freestyle with a 5:18.27, one of the fastest times for La Verne in recent memory.

Krislyn Cha just missed out on making the evening finals in the 200 individual medley, but posted a lifetime best 2:16.62 in the morning preliminaries.

Cha, Fuertez, Mary Hanna and Jacqueline Rojas registered season best splits for LA Verne in the 200 freestyle relay to take sixth at 1:42.33.

The men's team continued its roller coaster ride on Friday.

Highlighting the men's competition was Daniel Carpenter, who became the first La Verne men to crack 21 seconds in the 50 freestyle. The sophomore touched the wall in 20.79 seconds and made the podium with a third place finish.

But the men's relay teams continued to have problems at exchanges and the 200 freestyle A relay team was disqualified from the final event of the day. Had there been a clean touch, the Leopards would've broken the school record in the event with a time of 1:24.60.

Diver Scott MacKay medaled on the 3-meter board, finishing third with a score of 537.00.

In the morning prelims, freshmen Tyler Bennett and Josh Vega cut huge chunks off their seed times in the 500 freestyle, going 4:58.29 (from 5:17.22) and 5:14.71 (from 5:34.97), respectively.

Harry Bennett finished ninth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.45 and Jarrett Peterson took first in the consolation final of the vent with a lifetime best 1:56.02. Bennett went 1:57.42 in the prelims, also a lifetime best, but faded just a bit in the evening.

The Leopards return for Day 3 of the championships tomorrow. Prelims start at 9 a.m. and finals start at 5 p.m.
