Lovrensky defends 100 back, more records fall at SCIAC

WHITTIER, Calif. — Maddie Lovrensky of the University of La Verne swimming and diving team broke the school- and the SCIAC records in the women's 100 yard backstroke in the morning prelims and came back to win the event on Day 3 of the 2015 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships.

The La Verne All-American registered a blistering 55.49 in the prelims to set new standards and claim the top seed.

Lovrensky saw a stiff competition in Kelly Ngo of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the final. Ngo had better second and third turns, but Lovrensky used her superior speed and experience to win the race in 55.59 seconds. Ngo finished at 55.66.

With the win, Lovrensky collects her fourth 100 backstroke crown in four years. If she wins the 200 backstroke tomorrow, she will have finished her SCIAC career undefeated in backstroke events.

Two more school records fell on the women's side.

Jacqueline Rojas just missed out on the podium in the 100 breaststroke but finished with a time of 1:06.07. Krislyn Cha finished 17th in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:49.87 to better her own record in the event.

The 400 medley team of Lovrensky, Rojas, Cha and Melanie Consiglio finished second behind Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a time of 3:54.73.

Amber DeLoye finished ninth in the women's 3-meter diving with a total score of 290.05.

Miranda Chavez and Mary Hanna returned to evening finals in the 100 breaststroke and the 100 backstroke, respectively. Chavez finished 17th at 1:11.77 and Hanna Came in 15th with a time of 1:02.19

Jarrett Peterson turned in the most impressive swim on the men's side, touching the wall at 1:42.84 in the 200 freestyle. He finished 11th in the event.

Sanchez came into the championships with the fastest in-season time in the 100 breaststroke, but finished fourth in the final with a NCAA B cut time of 56.43. The senior will get another chance to chance to make the podium tomorrow in the 200 breaststroke.
