WHITTIER, Calif. — When one thinks of an athlete thoroughly dominating an individual event, Michael Phelps or even Usain Bolt of track and field may come to mind.
Others need to look no further than the University of La Verne swimming and diving team, where senior Maddie Lovrensky ended her SCIAC career undefeated in all backstroke events in which she's competed.
On Sunday, Lovrensky completed her four-year career sweep with a dominant win in the 200 yard backstroke at the 2015 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships and was named the Female Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row.
The 200 backstroke was a typical Lovrensky performance. After three relays and two championships races in the first three days of the competition, the senior All-American dug deep to get out to a big lead in the first 100 and cruised to an easy win for her third gold of the championships.
She won the 50 freestyle on Friday and defended the 100 backstroke title last night.
Lovrensky will now turn her attention to the 2015 NCAA National Championships where she will look to add to her already massive legacy.
Through the SCIAC Championships, Lovrensky owns the school records in: The 50 freestyle, the 200 freestyle, the 100 backstroke, the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley. She was also a member of the record-setting 800 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay teams.
A total of 10 Leopards made it to the evening finals on Sunday.
Melanie Consiglio and Daniel Carpenter broke school records in the men's and the women's 100 freestyle, respectively, while winning the consolation finals of their events. Consiglio touched the wall at 53.40 and Carpenter registered a time of 46.08 seconds.
Mike Sanchez took second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:04.46 seconds and Harry Bennett finished fifth at 2:07.35.
Jarrett Peterson came in fourth in the 200 backstroke at 1:54.79.
Jacqueline Rojas wrapped her impressive career with a fifth place finish in the women's 200 breaststroke (2:26.15) and Miranda Chavez finished 16th in the event with a time of 2:35.10.
Karla Fuertez and Tyler Bennett had good showings in the mile. Fuertez finished 14th in the women's event with a time of 18:27.61 and Bennett went 17:40.92 to finish 19th in the men's competition.
Scott MacKay finished fifth on the 1-meter diving with a total score of 475.50.
The women's 400 freestyle A relay team finished fourth and the men's A team finished seventh.
