SHENANDOAH, Texas — Maddie Lovrensky of the University of La Verne women's swimming and diving team lowered the school and SCIAC record in the 100 yard backstroke to take second place in the event at the 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

It is her fourth All-America award in the last three years.

The senior hit the wall in 54.73 seconds. Lovrensky was in fifth at the 50 yard mark, but turned on her jets in the final half of the race to pull even with Slagel with about 20 yards to go. It looked like a dead heat at the wall, but Slagel was just able to out-touch Lovrensky by .16 seconds.

"It was an awesome race for Maddie," La Verne head coach Pat Skehan said. "She just rises to the occasion. She needed about five more inches for the win but it was truly a swim for the record books."

Lovrensky came into the meet ranked eighth in the nation but posted the second fastest time (55.09) in the morning prelims to move into the middle lanes.

"It has been four years getting faster every big swim," Skehan added. "That's so difficult to do. … In all my years of coaching, I have never had anyone improve so consistently."

Lovrensky has one more swim left. She will compete in the 200 yard backstroke tomorrow to try to add to her massive trophy collection.
