Swimming & Diving kicks off at Pomona-Pitzer Relays

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams opened their 2015-16 season against tough competition at the annual Pomona-Pitzer Relays on Saturday.

La Verne swam only four seniors—all on the women's side—and showed signs of potential. Freshman Rachel Fox was involved in four top-10 finishes and fellow rookies Kayla Yip and Kirsten Knobloch were a part of three top-10 teams.

The best finish in the women's competition came in the 3x100 yard breaststroke relay in which Miranda Chavez, Krislyn Cha and Fox combined to go 3:35.47 for a third place finish.

On the men's side, Timothy Polman, Harry Bennett, CJ Woodward and Daniel Carpenter teamed up to go 1:28:48 in the 200 freestyle relay to come in third, the best finish for the men in the meet. The quartet kicked off the meet with a seventh place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.59.

Woodward, a freshman, also teamed up with Mary Hanna, Andrew Okimura and Fox in the mixed 8x25 medley relay and came in seventh (1:41.66).

In the 8x25 freestyle relay, Lora Marquez-Salgado, Polman, MacAskill and Tyler Bennett finished eighth with a time of 1:33.52.

Women's 3x100 butterfly team added a top-five finish, coming in fifth as Yip, Ashley and Cha recorded a time of 3:08.95.

Rachel Miyoga, Hanna, Yip and Karla Fuertez finished eighth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.51.

Hanna, Cha and Miyoga added a sixth place finish in the 3x100 backstroke relay with a time of 3:15.56.

La Verne returns to action on Saturday in a dual meet against Occidental.
