CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams recorded a handful of personal best times at the SCIAC Multi-Dual against Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at Haldeman Pool.
"It was a great meet for us," La Verne head coach Pat Skehan said. "A lot of people stepped up and had season or lifetime bests. We were much more prepared to race and saw some new faces step up and make things happen."
One of the new faces was freshman Kayla Yip who edged out fellow freshman Kathryn Monahan of Cal Lutheran to win the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.05 and notched a personal record of 2:13.77 in the 200 fly to take second place.
On the men's side, junior transfer Timothy Polman took the 100 free with a time of 47.70 and Daniel Carpenter was right behind at 47.72.
Carpenter added a second-place finish in the 50 free at 21.77.
Other great races came from Miranda Chavez, who turned in two personal record times of 1:11.91 in the 100 breaststroke (2nd) and 5:39.62 in the 500 freestyle (8th). Karla Fuertez came in second in the 1000 free with a time of 11:14.52 and fourth in the 500 free at 5:28.12, both personal bests.
Scott MacKay swept the men's diving portion, winning the 1-meter board with a score of 239.15 and the 3-meter with a score of 243.80.
Amber DeLoye won the women's 3-meter with a score of 139.45 and came in second on the 1-meter (135.30).
The women turned in a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 medley relay (1:57.79) and the 400 free relay (3:49.05). Rachel Fox, who was a part of both relays, came in second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:32.57 and sixth in the 200 free at 2:03.68.
Mary Hanna had a couple of top-4 finishes in the 100 back (1:04.77, 2nd) and the 100 free (57.00, 4th).
"The team swam a lot of events and really raced effectively," Skehan said. "=Our captains have done an outstanding job at keeping the team working hard with a focus on the future. I could not have been more pleased with the entire team's performance."
La Verne will host the annual Collegiate Winter Invitational on Dec. 11-13 at South Gate.
